It Started with a Dream

Married couple Jonathan and April always dreamt of operating their own aesthetics and skincare business, aiming to offer the finest services at the most affordable possible prices. That dream was troubled during the recession, but when Jonathan’s personal skincare and hair removal specialist went out of business, he saw an opportunity. The physician assistant found an empty rental suffering from a lack of tenants, letting the landlord know he had nothing to offer at the time. Jonathan promised to DIY a sign and bring traffic in exchange for eight months of free rent.

Smart Money Moves

Armed with their Home Depot credit card, Jonathan and April began to redo the place themselves, drawing on their home refurbishment background. Jonathan didn’t leave his job at the emergency room; instead, he worked his 12-hour night shift, slept at home for a few hours, and opened The Laser Lounge Spa™ at noon. He manned the front desk, took calls, made clients’ appointments, and operated the laser hair removal device that had been sitting neglected in the closet until then. As receptionists, janitors, and technicians, April and Jonathan saved on their low overhead while earning plenty of clients with their low prices.

Building Something Special

Word spread! In less than a year, Jonathan could move the business to a larger space, even hiring a part-time front desk employee to handle all the new clients coming in. It wasn’t long until the spa offered a broader range of services, from neurotoxins and dermal fillers to other laser treatments. April and Jonathan knew they had built something special: a space where every client is beautiful, and beauty doesn’t have to be expensive.
